"umakemenotwannadie" is a complete twist from Palaye Royale's iconic sound and I'm so here for it. Normally, we're used to Palaye Royale's up-beat pop punk/rock music accompanied by Remington's raspy, rock voice and shouty choruses. However, their latest single is completely different having used a slower tempo, more toned down instrumentals and softer vocals.
"umakemenotwannadie" shows listeners a new side of Palaye Royale that's soft and romantic.
After listening to their instrumentals, you'll immediately notice the difference compared to their heavier albums like "Fever Dream". Majority of the song consists of a simple drum beat mainly using the hi-hats and a loop of the same chords on the bass with the exception of the chorus having a slightly more complex and up-beat drum pattern and stronger bass and guitar accompanied by high notes from a synth.
Remington's voice suits this genre very much, his voice becomes more of a whisper which makes the song softer and gives more meaning to the song; you can hear and feel the emotions this song has (love and fear). He knew exactly when to strain his voice to give the song more variety vocally. Most of the lyrics are sweet and loving except for the line "When you dig your nails into my back. And I pull your hair while I bite your neck" where Remington strained his voice to express the aggression and passion in that memory as if he was recalling it in that very moment. It gave the song more emotion and feeling which took it to the next level.
"umakemenotwannadie" is only just one of the songs of the band's upcoming EP "Songs for Sadness" which introduces a new style and era for Palaye Royale. This single gave us a little sneak peak on what to expect and I'm so excited to hear this new side of Palaye Royale coming out on 19th January!
