PRODUCERS UNPLUGGED: Han Jisung

as08lmusic

As promised, following my article on Stray Kids’ Bangchan, I will be writing about the other members of 3RACHA’s journey as music producers. In this article, I will be covering Han Jisung. Although Han hasn’t disclosed as much about his work in the studio as Bangchan, I’ve gathered all the information I could and will also reference Stray Kids’ Recording Behinds :)

Firstly, it is undeniable that 3RACHA is one of the biggest idol producers in the K-pop industry, especially in the 4th generation. As mentioned in my previous article, all three members won the Best Creator Award at the 2023 AAA. At 22 years old, Han remains the third most credited 4th Gen idol in KOMCA with 135 songs. Even before Stray Kids gained popularity, Han was an active member of 3RACHA, writing and performing songs as a unit and contributing to all of Stray Kids’ albums. This information alone highlights his prowess as a producer.

Han and 3RACHA’s overall success can be partially attributed to Han’s pure talent. Many have given him the title “Ace of K-pop” due to his ability to excel in all three elements of being a K-pop idol: dance, rap, and vocals. Han’s main role in the group is as a rapper, alongside Hyunjin, Felix, Changbin, and occasionally Bangchan. His flow has been praised repeatedly, and for good reason. Not only are his raps self-written, but he also executes them effortlessly despite their complexity. While I’m not an expert on rap, I can recognize talent when I hear it, and I am not alone in this assessment.

Despite being a main rapper, Han does not slack in his vocals. His vocal abilities can be seen through iconic performances such as of “I’ll Be Your Man” during Kingdom and the group’s cover of SHINee’s “Sherlock” during a fansign. Additionally, Han recently showcased his guitar-playing skills while performing his latest solo song during a tour. These qualities aid Han in his producer journey, especially when writing songs and recording demos. Han and 3RACHA record entire songs themselves so that other members have a reference. Impressively, Han often demos for Changbin’s rap parts, adjusting his style and flow to suit Changbin’s, which I think perfectly shows his diversity and flexibility as a rapper and producer.

Every producer has a unique style in the studio. Bangchan is patient and creates a comfortable recording environment. Changbin is straightforward, offering tough love and corrective feedback. Han, in contrast, adopts a softer approach. Often seen napping on the sofa in Stray Kids’ Recording Behinds ( can’t blame him, I would too <3 ), Han, when awake, promotes an open and flexible recording process. He encourages artists to follow their instincts rather than strictly adhering to the demo. For example, he once told Changbin, “As long as it’s in key I’m fine, do it your style,” when Changbin struggled to follow the demo. This quality is one quality I find quite admirable as it shows Han’s openness to change and commitment to making the artists comfortable which shows just how much he respects the people he works with and his willingness to change and adapt.

If you’re interested in understanding Han better, especially his style in the studio, I highly recommend watching SKZ Recording Behinds, it's one of my favorite things to watch and has actually inspired me to become a music producer. These videos offer a glimpse into Han’s love for music, the people he works with and his collaborative spirit.
